debarnesphotography.com: About Me

Portrait or Personal Image - Denny E Barnes

I started life in Kansas. Spent a couple years in Colorado and then moved to Springfield Oregon in 1949. After graduating from high school, I went to work for a wood manufacturing company for 42 years. During that time I went through an electrical apprenticeship and became a licensed electrician, millwright and machinist. In the meantime, in 1965 I joined the Navy and served for four years. I retired in 2004 and now live on a small farm in Marion County near Salem, Oregon.

I loved to draw from a very early age and started oil painting as a teenager. Those interests have been replaced by a love of photography. But whether it's drawing, painting or photography, color and light are still my favorite components when composing a scene. I still have a long way to go but I’m learning something new every day.

My first camera was a Brownie back in the black and white days. My next camera, in the 60s, was a 35mm. I added a zoom lens to it and used it mostly for slide photos. My first digital was a Kodak DX 7590 and then a Kodak P850. I now use a Nikon D300 with an 18-200mm VR lens.

My first loves are nature and wildlife photography. I have toured most of the Western National Parks, State Parks and Animal Parks in both the United States and Canada. Now that I have a much better camera, I want to do it all over again…
